mock exams next week, then it's spring break! =) i'll be off to calgary to stay with my aunt for a week. homecooked, singaporean food finally. and sleepytime. and privacy, well, of some sort. and just a time to get away and be quiet and reflect on things and slow down to seek the Lord. -sigh of relief-

the sermon this week was thought provoking...it was about having mentors, team mates and rookies in our Christian walk. Who are we following and are we living in a way and making choices such that others can safely follow and model? we sang the song i really like - Till I See You: "I will live a child in awe of You"

hmmm, just got back from our chemistry "field trip" haha. to the sewage plant on campus coz we're learning about sewage treatment. it was quite interesting...i guess...to know that we process our own sewage. Apparently, the whole campus generates 40 000 - 45 000L of waste water per day. that's quite a lot of waste water...
yupp.

last week was real nice~ wednesday was special topics day - sustainable development. there was a speaker who's pretty young and has been working in tanzania with youth and stuff...then workshops. Andrew Moore came, he works in South Africa with an NGO called "rooftops Canada" and he was explaining how the housing co op in Johannesburg work. The Masisizane Womens Housing Co-operative is a group of women banded together and pooled their savings to build houses for everyone in the community over many years...so basically they all saved about a dollar or two a day each and when there was enough money they'd build a house for one family in the community...and it went on. and they involve the beneficiaries in the building process and generate jobs - farming, building, brick manufacturing etc. - for the people in the community. and they've built an impressive number of houses...and have expanded the project such that they now receive government funding and no longer need to rely on savings. Which brings to mind microcredit. Co ops and microcredit are two things that I think have such potential to alleviate poverty, though only on a small scale. It seems when things get too large scale it spins out of control, or bureaucracies and red tape hinder and slow the process down and ultimately simply breaks the system down. Or maybe it's because when it gets too large scale it loses the personal interaction and accountability and hence effectiveness. -shrugs- but if you have many small groups working on it...it would reach out to many people too, it's not necessary to have one giant organization.

A marimbas band came to play that evening and everyone was dancing =) the music was real upbeat and lovely. and on friday, priyanka and some other indians organized a charity indian dinner to raise funds for pakistani relief efforts...the curry was amazing, and so was dessert, which was galub jamun (Deep fried wheat balls, soaked with syrup). ahh, i miss indian food. the victoria high R&B band came to perform on saturday evening...it was surprisingly good =) got everyone dancing once again. haha, and the back up singers all wore short black dresses and had coordinated hand movements and the pianist wore blindman kind of sunglasses...absolutely classic. =)
