"make poverty history"
haha.that was the conference we attended today.
we totally thought it'd be deep discussions abt poverty and what the organization's doing abt it, how as students we can get our school involved and all. but well, we were a little disappointed.
it started out with a game of oligopoly. that was a good game that managed to raise awareness about various trade issues and highlighted the significant role TNCs play in the world etc. The people in my group were wondering what WTO stood for. and what sweatshops were. so well, that didnt go too well for me. when the facilitator asked me if i knew anything about the agriculture industry and food dumping, i told them about USA's agriculture subsidies and how they impacted the LDCs...and the facilitator was really shocked that i knew abt it.
-shrugs- and i felt they were being a little too simplistic abt their view on some things...they're like. regulation is good and deregulation is bad. as if it's just black and white, draw a line. guess we felt it was more that the facilitors werent willing to bring it a step deeper...it was just touch and go, as thoughd they were dumbing it down for us just coz we're high sch students.
then we had a workshop abt poverty in canada. which i expected to be good...informative and discussing what could be done. i was interested in it coz canada's viewed as a developed nation and wealthy and stuff, but there's still a big problem of poverty which is often overlooked. but well, it was real disappointing coz they just ended up talking about the low levels of education amongst native canadians. [argh] it was real frustrating.
butbutbut. it wasnt all dreadful at least. haha. there was this nobel peace prize candidate there - this columbian woman who leads a woman's rights group in columbia. and she told us abt the situation in columbia and what her organization did. it was amazing! she told here story in spanish [and i could understand more than half of it] and then someone translated it. she's really an amazing and brave woman. she's putting her life on the line - she has to go arnd with 4 bodyguards and cant allow ppl to know who her children are - in order to fight for the safety and wellbeing of women and youths in the country. yea, that part made the whole conference worth it for me =)
yup, so we escaped at after lunch. but i still really wanna find out more abt the "make poverty history" movement coz it sounds brilliant. hope we can get involved in it some other way - particularly wrt children.
came back to watch kum ji yoke yip or jin zhi yu ye. which we're totally hooked on. hahah. it's sooooooo nice to watch a chinese period drama again you have no idea! it just takes me back home. -sigh- a pillow fight and a tickle fight ensued. it's DREADFUl to be ticklish. i will overcome it one day!
